Tourist arrivals on the rise in Turkey

28 November 2008

A report published by Turkey's ministry of culture and tourism has shown a dramatic increase in the number of tourist arrivals in October 2008.

Official figures show that an estimated 2.46 million people elected to visit Turkey in October, representing a 14.38 per cent rise compared to the same period in 2007, reports rttnews.com.

This latest rise follows an increase of 6.49 per cent in the number of new tourist arrivals in the country in September of this year.

The statistics also revealed that 61.8 per cent of Turkey's overall tourist arrivals arrived from OECD countries, while 22.87 per cent visited from eastern European locations.

Germany had the highest share of tourists for October, with 20.3 per cent of the total number of visitors, with the United Kingdom second with 9.41 per cent.

Popular destinations with tourists in Turkey are the capital Istanbul, the Black Sea, Central Anatolia and the Aegean regions.
