Turkey praised as a diving hotspot
05 December 2008
Turkey's southern coast has been described as a new hotspot for divers by the Hurriyet Daily News.
According to the paper, efforts are being made to increase the popularity of Side and Manavgat with divers.
The country has already submerged many planes and ships at different points along the southern coast to add interest to the area and provide shelter for various sea creatures. An old 30-metre coastguard boat has been submerged off the port at Side in a special ceremony.
Town mayor Osman Delikkulak told the newspaper that the efforts would increase tourism in the area.
He said: "We submerged this boat donated by the coast guards to create different opportunities for tourism to ensure tourists coming to spend their holiday in our town have a better time. This boat is the first leg of our project and we are planning to sink a few ships too."
